Transforming Water Inspirations into a Captivating Design

Takuji Kamio, the renowned designer behind Cups Kamakura, drew inspiration from the surrounding water and incorporated it into the design. By carefully considering elements such as color balance, sunlight reflection, and material selection, Kamio successfully translated water-inspired images into captivating spaces within the cafe and hotel.

To preserve the historical charm of the building, Kamio removed the ceiling panels, revealing the existing structures. He then applied a clear glossy lacquer to the wooden elements, enhancing their natural beauty while introducing steel supporting structures for added stability.

With a gross floor area of 230 sqm, Cups Kamakura stands as a testament to Kamio's meticulous attention to detail and innovative design approach. The project, which commenced in January 2020 and concluded in July 2020, is located in the scenic city of Kamakura, Japan.

Prior to the design process, extensive research was conducted by the team. They carefully examined the existing conditions of the building, removing exterior and interior panels to assess its structural integrity. Market studies were also conducted, analyzing over 100 neighboring hotels and restaurants to understand pricing, design trends, and overall atmosphere.

One of the major challenges faced during the design process was the preservation of the original structure. Kamio had to delicately balance the need for new supporting structures to ensure the building's strength while showcasing the beauty of the original frames. This required a meticulous matching of old and new structural characteristics, including shape, color, and material.

Cups Kamakura is a testament to the harmonious fusion of design and functionality. By drawing inspiration from the surrounding water and carefully considering every aspect of the space, Takuji Kamio has created a truly unique oceanfront cafe and hotel experience.

This exceptional design by Takuji Kamio has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This award celebrates designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
